Welcoming a new baby into the world is one of the most magical moments in life. Those first few weeks fly by in a blur of cuddles, feeds, and precious little milestones. As a specialist newborn photographer, I know just how important it is to capture these fleeting moments before they pass. But one of the most common questions I get asked is:
“Why do I need to book a provisional date for my newborn session? Can I not just wait until baby arrives?”
If you’re wondering the same thing, let me explain why securing a slot early is the best way to ensure you don’t miss out on these once-in-a-lifetime memories.

1. Newborn Photography Works Best in the First Two Weeks
Newborn photography is all about capturing your little one in those sleepy, curled-up poses that melt hearts. The ideal time for this is when your baby is between 5-21 days old. At this stage, they’re still very sleepy and flexible, making it easier to gently pose them for those beautiful, timeless images.
After two weeks, babies start to stretch out, become more alert, and may develop things like baby acne or colic. While we can still capture beautiful images at any stage, those classic, dreamy newborn shots are best done early.
2. My Diary Fills Up Quickly!
As a newborn specialist, I only take a limited number of bookings per month to ensure flexibility for all my clients. Babies don’t always arrive on their due date (in fact, most don’t!), so by securing a provisional slot around your estimated due date, you have peace of mind that I’ll have space for you once baby arrives.
If you wait until baby is born to book, you might find that my diary is already full, meaning I can’t fit you in during that perfect newborn window.
3. Provisional Dates Are Flexible
I completely understand that babies arrive when they’re ready – some come early, some take their time! That’s why your provisional booking is flexible. When you book while you’re still pregnant, I pencil in a date around your due date.
Once baby arrives, all you need to do is get in touch within 48 hours, and we’ll adjust your session date accordingly. This ensures you get your newborn photos done at just the right time, without the stress of last-minute availability issues.
4. Less Stress for You
In the whirlwind of having a newborn, the last thing you want to worry about is scrambling to find a photographer. By booking in advance, you can tick it off your to-do list and focus on enjoying those first precious days with your baby.
You’ll also have time to prepare for your session, look at styling options, and feel excited rather than rushed.
So, When Should I Book?
I always recommend booking your newborn session after your 20-week scan. This guarantees your space and gives us plenty of time to plan. If your baby arrives early or late, we simply adjust your session date accordingly.
